GRS Certified Recycled Fill Fiber — rPSF for Sustainable Bedding Brands
Why GRS Certification Is Now a Retail Compliance Requirement
‘Made with GRS-certified recycled polyester’ has moved from a sustainability differentiation claim to a retail procurement baseline in the bedding and home textile industry. IKEA, H&M, Marks & Spencer, Target, Primark, and their supply chain equivalents have supplier codes of conduct that explicitly require GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification for any recycled polyester claim — and they audit compliance at purchase order stage, not just at supplier onboarding.
The commercial reality: if your fiber supplier cannot provide GRS Transaction Certificates (TCs) per shipment, your brand cannot make a verified recycled polyester claim on your finished product — regardless of what the fiber supplier tells you about their recycled content. The TC is the shipment-level documentation that your own certification body requires to issue and maintain your brand’s GRS Scope Certificate. Without it, any recycled content claim on your product is unverifiable and legally exposed.
VNPOLYFIBER holds GRS chain-of-custody certification — scope certificate verifiable at textiledirectory.textileexchange.org — covering our full HCS siliconized, hollow slick, solid, and LMF product range in recycled grades. We issue GRS Transaction Certificates per shipment as a standard supply document, not a special request.
Scope Certificate vs Transaction Certificate: The Critical Distinction
The most common GRS compliance error made by brands sourcing recycled fiber is treating the supplier’s Scope Certificate as sufficient documentation. It is not. The two documents serve different functions:
- GRS Scope Certificate (company-level): Certifies that VNPOLYFIBER’s chain-of-custody management systems meet GRS requirements. Valid for one year. Verifiable at Textile Exchange directory. Proves we are a certified company — but does NOT prove that any specific shipment contains certified material.
- GRS Transaction Certificate (shipment-level): Issued per specific delivery. Documents the exact quantity shipped, recycled content percentage, feedstock type (post-consumer or pre-consumer), and the specific buyer and seller. This is the document your certification body requires to certify your finished product. Without a TC for each input fiber shipment, you cannot complete the chain-of-custody documentation for your own brand GRS claim.
The analogy: the Scope Certificate is the license that proves VNPOLYFIBER is qualified to drive. The Transaction Certificate is the receipt that proves we actually delivered the goods on that specific order. Both are required. One without the other is insufficient for compliance purposes.
How to Obtain Your Brand-Level GRS Certification Using VNPOLYFIBER Supply
- Step 1 — Select an accredited certification body: Textile Exchange maintains a list of GRS-accredited certification bodies (Control Union, Bureau Veritas, Intertek, SGS, TESTEX, and others). Your factory or brand applies to one of these bodies for a GRS Scope Certificate.
- Step 2 — Provide input material documentation: Your certification body requires documentation proving your input fiber is GRS certified. This is VNPOLYFIBER’s GRS Scope Certificate plus the Transaction Certificate for each fiber shipment you have received and will use. VNPOLYFIBER provides both documents with every shipment.
- Step 3 — Audit of your processes: The certification body audits your factory’s chain-of-custody process — how you receive, store, process, and label certified material separately from non-certified material. Physical separation of GRS fiber inventory from non-GRS inventory is required.
- Step 4 — Issue of your Scope Certificate: Once audit is passed, your brand receives a GRS Scope Certificate for your product category. This allows you to issue Transaction Certificates to your own customers and to display the GRS label on your products.
Applications
- Sustainable consumer bedding: GRS claim on hang tag and packaging. OEKO-TEX on product label. The dual visible certification that sustainable retail buyers require.
- Retail sustainability program compliance: H&M Conscious, IKEA Better Cotton/Better Materials, M&S Plan A, Target Forward — all require documented recycled content with GRS certification.
- Hotel sustainability program bedding: Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Accor ESG procurement. GRS TCs per shipment for Scope 3 Category 1 documentation.
- Children’s products (dual certified): GRS + OEKO-TEX Class I simultaneously. Sustainable toy and children’s bedding brands.
- Corporate ESG procurement: GRS TCs support Scope 3 Category 1 (purchased goods and services) reporting under GHG Protocol. rPSF at ~2.0 kg CO₂e/kg vs virgin PSF at ~5.5 kg CO₂e/kg — approximately 60–70% GHG reduction documented.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is post-consumer recycled content a higher-value claim than pre-consumer?
Yes — and GRS specifies the distinction in every Transaction Certificate. Post-consumer means material that has completed its intended use by end consumers (PET bottles collected after consumer disposal). Pre-consumer means manufacturing offcuts or production waste that never reached a consumer. Post-consumer is the stronger circular economy claim — it represents material rescued from the waste stream. VNPOLYFIBER’s recycled grades are sourced from post-consumer PET bottle feedstock. Your GRS TC will specify ‘post-consumer recycled content’ — the designation that carries more credibility with sustainability-focused retailers, NGOs, and corporate procurement teams.
Q: Does recycled HCS fill perform the same as virgin in pillow filling machines?
Yes. GRS-certified rHCS siliconized fill fiber processes through pillow stuffing machines with identical behavior to virgin HCS of the same specification. The intrinsic viscosity (IV) of our recycled PET grades (0.62–0.68 dL/g) falls within the normal commercial range for fiber spinning, and our conjugate crimp specification, silicone pickup level, hollow cross-section, and denier are produced to the same parameters as virgin equivalents. No production line adjustment is required when switching from virgin to GRS recycled HCS of equivalent grade.
Q: How many recycled bottles does a shipment of rHCS represent?
Approximately 60–70 standard 500ml PET bottles are required per kg of recycled PSF, accounting for collection losses, sorting losses, washing yield, and melt-spinning yield. For a standard 20-tonne container of rHCS fill fiber: approximately 1.2–1.4 million recycled bottles. VNPOLYFIBER provides bottle-count estimates per shipment weight for brands who want to communicate this metric in consumer marketing (‘this pillow was filled with fiber made from X recycled plastic bottles’).
Q: What if my retail buyer requires a different recycled content percentage?
GRS-certified recycled PSF can be supplied at 100% recycled content or blended with virgin PSF at any ratio. Your GRS TC documents the exact recycled content percentage of the fiber shipment — 100%, 80%, 50%, or as specified. If you blend rHCS and virgin HCS in production, you must maintain documented separation of the two streams and declare the blend ratio accurately in your own GRS records. VNPOLYFIBER can supply at the recycled content percentage your retail buyer requires.
