Bicomponent fiber PE/PP

What are bicomponent fibers?

Bicomponent fibers are created when two distinct polymers are extruded together to create a fiber. Both the polymers used and their geometric arrangement can be changed based on the desired property profile. The geometry of our bicomponent fibers is sheath-core. A sheath composed of a polymer with a lower melting point, like PE or Co-PET, envelops a high-melting PET core. When utilized as a binding fiber, the sheath polymer can be melted while a nonwoven is thermally bonded without causing the fiber core to soften. Consequently, a solid network with defined porosity is created when the softened sheath polymer flows to fiber crossing locations and connects them after cooling.

Benefits of BiComponent Fiber

  • High final product strength and robust fiber bonding
  • The binding process can regulate porosity.
  • Excellent workability
  • No liquid binders are used.

Drawbacks of BiComponent Fiber

  • Limited capacity to be recycled
  • Nonwoven is thermally stable only within the sheath polymer’s softening range.

Production process of bi-component fiber

Melt spinning is used to create bicomponent fibers. High-quality manufacturing depends on the spinneret’s geometry and design as well as the two polymer components’ independent supply to the spinneret. Only after or just before exiting the spinneret do the polymer components come into contact with one another. The fibers are further adapted to the specific purpose in later stages of the process, such as stretching or applying the finish.

Application of BiComponent Fiber

  • Lead-acid automobile batteries, brake pads, and friction pads
  • Paper: Security, Wallpaper, Decoration, and Special
  • Filters for Liquids, Air, and Oil
